It is not necessary for your legs to be set widely apart to walk with snowshoes. With narrow snowshoes (10 to 12 inches - 25 to 30 cm wide) an adult will walk normally. With 14 inches (35 cm) wide snowshoes, it will be sufficient to lift your knees slightly higher with each step to allow the narrow portion of the snowshoe to land next to the larger portion of the opposite snowshoe.
Snowshoes are identical, only the binding will determine the left foot from right foot. A walking stick is also recommended since it eases one's balance while climbing or descending and proves practical when confronted with off-trail obstacles.
In forest areas, it is not a good idea to walk on low lying branches of conifers that are covered with snow since they often hide air pockets. Also, one should avoid supporting his total weight on both ends of the snowshoes such as crossing a depression or jumping over obstacles.
One last piece of advice is to wear gaiters with low-cut boots or cross-country ski boots in order to keep your feet dry. |
